Putting the "care" in Caregiving

 Hello!

My name is Grace.  I am a licensed Caregiver based in the Philippines.

I was teenage mom. And so like many young moms at the time, dreams took the back seat to care for family. Many years have passed. With my kids all grown up, my sister told me, why don't you finish high school, there are many night schools nowadays.  And so I took ALS or the Alternative Learning System.  I passed and got my high school diploma.

Then my sister asked "what do you want to do for yourself if you have the means?"... I said I want to be a teacher or a nurse. But since both would require four full years of college and board exams, I said it may not come true.  So I thought of the next best thing--caregiving.  I took at Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College.  I trained in public hospitals. I passed.

I thought I go abroad and find work. Unfortunately, I was overaged. It didn't matter if I was qualified.  So, I get work through referrals from co-caregivers to do private duty. I cared for patients in Philippine heart Center-Cardiac Rehabilitation Section, Chinese General Hospital, The Medical City, The Premier Medical Center and Providence Hospital.

I do more than give the sick his or her medicines. I do basic therapy and exercise, help with eating, bathing, grooming, toileting. I read to them, I make them laugh, talk to them about hope.

Sometimes there are work. But, often times there are none.  Eventually, those who can't afford therapy would DM me privately for tips on how to care for the sick.  So I message them back to give guidance, sometimes I demo, too, using video.

Should you need help in caring for the sick, I am here.  Covid or no Covid.

[ As translated in english by my sister. I can speak English, too. :) ]
